I booted the machine with FreeNAS 8 and did the zpool replace - which started, and immediately started throwing piles of data corruption errors and kernel panics - despite a weekly scrub of the pool never finding any issues. Carl Marshal recently posted FreeNAS a software that can work independently or virtually. It has a bit higher of a learning curve maybe, but once you get it I'd argue it isn't quite as hard as it looks. In the next two articles, I'll show you what hardware I chose and the process I used to configure FreeNAS for my home network.
